Online poker remains a thriving global enterprise. This, in spite of the massive changes sweeping the playing field of late, showcases an important fact: poker is here to stay and players are keen to learn more about the game, to play the game and to profit from it. Poker has been labeled, ‘a game of skill with a kiss from Lady Luck’ and online players can enjoy this game in multiple formats. These include downloadable games and non-downloadable games.

When logging on to your choice of online poker sites – many A-grade options abound – you are confronted with the option to play poker in a full download format – which is terrific, or off your browser. Each of these formats provides possibilities aplenty for players. Exploring them will yield a world of opportunity for enhanced poker action.

Full Download Poker Clients

For the majority of top-tier online poker rooms, full download poker clients are where it’s at. This option allows you to enjoy everything the poker room has to offer – including maximum audio-visual effects, a full range of promotions, quick-and-easy access to games of poker whenever you want to play them and so much more. For example the inimitable 888poker – a kingpin of world-class poker action – provides a full download client whereby you can enjoy 3D poker. These types of software bundles – while a little time consuming to load up, are totally worth it. Customizable playing areas, different backgrounds, avatars and three-dimensional poker action are all the rage.

No Download Poker – the Easy Solution

Gaming pundits will find that no-download poker is a safe, fun and reliable way to get the hottest poker action in an instant. If you’re keen to get ‘virtual seated’ in double-quick time, this is the way to go. There are no software bundles to download and you’ve only got to log on and play your favourite games – Texas Hold’em, Razz, Stud and Omaha Hi-Lo – without having to download any software. Real-time, no download poker software is all the rage. The benefits of this type of software are plentiful and include the following:

You can enjoy Mac poker gaming whenever you want in an instant

Play your choice of poker games in an instant

It’s fast and free and it works directly off your browser

The manner in which these games work is simple: they’re Java or Flash software platforms. They’re compatible on most every system imaginable and there are very few impediments to world-class gaming action. Players can participate in all manner of cash games, Sit & Go tourneys and even MTTs. For the most part, there is little (if any) difference between these games and full-download poker clients. There are loads of incentives to play free poker – like no deposits – and maximum rewards. It’s all about the game – pure poker and nothing else.

Poker’s the name and forming great hands is the game. But before we even get into it with poker, it’s imperative to understand just what all these essential terms are referring to. Let’s start off with the most prized poker game of them all – Texas Hold’em. This game features several rounds of betting where players will have to square up against one another. There are small blinds, big blinds, hole cards, community cards, the flop, the turn and the river. The latter three components simple make references to successive levels of the game where additional (turn and river) cards are placed into the community pile. Each player is dealt hole cards to start with – these are dealt face down. Only you can see your own 2 hole cards. The community cards are placed in the center of the table – face up. Players can make any number of combinations from the cards in front of them.

How do you create card combinations in poker?

The purpose of this introductory expose is not to accurately define every concept – because they can really get detailed – but rather to provide a little more clarity on the various aspects of the game. Card combinations in Texas Hold’em and other games are created based on pre-set values as determined by global poker regulations. In this vein there are many fantastic options to aspire towards ranging from a Royal Flush to a High Card. Everything in between goes too – this includes a Straight, a Flush, Four-of-a-Kind, Three-of-a-Kind, a Pair and so forth. Other combinations are certainly possible and it’s your call as to which hand you’re looking to create – based on what the folded cards are and what your opponents are holding. So stay intently focused on the game and watch what the players are doing.

Top tips for beginners in online poker

Shift expectations and experiment from time to time

Know the rules of the game you’re playing

Start by playing at low-stakes poker tables.

Understand your hand combinations

Manage your bankroll judiciously

Don’t be afraid to fold regularly

Play for the love of poker

What most poker greenhorns fail to realize is that the quintessential image of a poker player hustling and bluffing his or her way to mega-stardom and riches is largely a pipe-dream. Sure you can make a mint off poker, but you’ve got to be savvy. You’ve got to know your game inside out, but more importantly you’ve got to know how to read the players and the cards. When I started out, I was fresh out of school and running dangerously low on luck. In my defense however, I knew that I needed to stay the course and eventually my fortunes would change. So my first and foremost tip to all of you guys is the following: Poker is as much a game of skill and strategy as it is a game of luck. Bide your time and remember that you the good flops will come your way. Take it step-by-step. You’ll be hot and you’ll be cold, but that’s what it’s all about. Navigate around the cold spells and fire-up your poker engine when the fall of the cards are going your way. Here’s sane advice:

If you’re scared to punt, you’ve already lost that money. You should always have at the bankroll of at least 300 big blinds in Texas Holdem Limit Games and for No-Limit and/or Pot Limit games you should have at least enough cash for 20 buy-ins.

And remember to play confidently when you play. If you show fear, your opponents will pick up on it before you know what’s going on. In the same manner I’ve always tended towards crafty play. I mean carve out a niche for yourself – don’t continually allow yourself to be beaten by competing against players infinitely smarter than yourself. Scope out the lie of the land and play where you have a competitive advantage. If you’re really sharp you’ll be looking up players’ profiles to see their stats – that’s always a great indicator of what you’re up against.

Other important points to bear in mind when playing poker

I can’t seem to stress it enough but you need to realize that you have to be focused when playing poker. Your mind must be on the games and not elsewhere. If you are in an emotional tizz, then don’t go out (or stay in for that matter) gambling. Emotional plays are unsafe and potentially very costly. This goes for substance induced highs too – stay away from the game when your head’s awash in other thoughts. Of prime importance too, is playing the game at all levels. What I mean by this is that you should be able to shift gears accordingly. Don’t be stuck in the same playing mode – experiment. Learn to uncover tells, read between the lines and pick up on behaviour. You’ll make plenty more winning plays if you learn the ways of your opponents.

There are few card games that can compare to poker. The levels of intensity and powers of concentration are immense. And to think that you can use your smarts to lead your opponents astray is indeed an immense asset to have in your arsenal. But remember that in poker it is most often your ability to consistently compile valuable hands that is going to allow you to gain advantage over the other players. I am a big fan of Texas Hold’em and 7-Card Stud. Insofar as these games are worldwide favourites they are also loaded with some of the biggest money prizes. Once I enter a poker room, folks tend to give me the once over. It’s almost as if their eyes are scrutinizing the very essence of me and asking those poignant questions.
What I aim to do in this post is to provide you with some valuable starting tips to get you rolling with poker gaming. First off, remember that you’ve got card tables and hand-strength variations in poker. There’s no point worrying about whether or not you’ll remember these combos because they’re easily found at both online poker rooms and virtually everywhere else you’re seeking information on the game of poker. One word of advice though: don’t go trying to form 3 pairs in poker because you’ve only got 5 cards! The more you play the game, the quicker you’ll get to know which card combinations are more valuable.

Here are poker hand valuations for newbies to remember:

Royal Flushes (5 cards all dressed up the same way from a 10–J-Q-K-A) odds of this happening are scare – over 600,000 to 1.

Straight Flushes (Here you’ve got 5 cards dressed up the same way without the need for Royals, but in consecutive order) odds of this happening are 72,000 to 1.

Four-of-a-kind (As its namesake suggests) Very rare hand combination too, with odds of over 4,000 to 1.

Full House (Three matching cards of 1 rank and 2 matching cards of another rank) odds of over 600 to 1.

A Flush (All cards of the same suit) is pretty swell to get first up but the odds of that happening are over 500 to 1.

A Straight is a great hand to get and it’s easy to tell when you hit one. Just gather 5 cards in a row of any suite. Odds of over 250 to 1.

Three-of-a-kind is otherwise known as a trip in poker. It’s a nice hand to hand – not very valuable but better than you think and it comes by every 46 times you play.

2 Pairs – These are any two pairs but not of the same card (because that would Four-of-a-kind and it’s significantly more valuable )

1 Pair – The higher your pair – the better – Aces High.

High Card – Go for the royals or better if you have to hold onto 1 card.
